A buyback is approved: check the numbers
Approval is the start of the closing details.
What to do, in order
- Get the written calculation, purchase or lease records, loan payoff, offsets, fees, taxes, finance charges and reimbursement items. Ask which legal or voluntary program applies.
- Ask how trade-in value, negative equity, accessories, protection products and unused service contracts are handled. Do not assume every item is included.
- Confirm lienholder payment, owner payment, surrender date, inspection, mileage limits, keys and documents. Coordinate with your lender and insurer.
- Read the release with counsel if appropriate. Retain payment proof and written confirmation that the loan or lease is satisfied before changing arrangements.
What you can say
“Please provide the itemized calculation and closing instructions, including lender payoff, payment timing, surrender conditions and any release.”
What to watch for
Do not stop payments just because approval was announced. Do not assume a repurchase erases negative equity or reimburses modifications.
