“That is normal for this model”

Ask for the basis of the finding and the limits of the comparison.

What to do, in order

  1. Ask for the written diagnostic conclusion, any applicable bulletin and the test performed. A model characteristic should still be evaluated against your actual symptom.
  2. If a comparison vehicle is used, ask whether its model year, configuration, software and conditions were comparable. Record what you actually observed.
  3. Describe the practical effect on use, safety or value. Send documented counterexamples through the case and seek a qualified second opinion if appropriate.

What you can say

“Please explain in writing what makes this condition normal, which guidance applies to my VIN, and how my reported symptom was evaluated.”

What to watch for

Do not accept an unsupported verbal label as your own diagnosis. A bulletin or another owner’s story does not prove your VIN has the same condition.

Your next step

Research manufacturer communications and keep the finding with your repair history.

These steps are suggested consumer practices. Follow case-specific instructions, state requirements and your attorney’s advice when they apply.
